Can anyone tell me ( why this is happening? )

I've been noticing that other designers are sending me files in the .png format. My only exposure to it has been a default screenshot image setting on my Mac. Is there a particular benefit (web-only) for .png versus other formats?

Just looking to get some opinions.

Hey guys, I am creating a screensaver in flash.
It is photo heavy (images slowly fading into other images, that sorta thing)
But when I publish the .swf file or .exe file, the images are heavily pixelated. I searched thru publish settings and preferences but can't find anything that improves published image quality.
Anyone have any ideas?

Stupidest question ever, I'm sure. I've got a logo that I'd like to save as a transparent gif. It will be placed on a page with a patterned background.

I'm running into a problem with it because I've set an outer glow with the standard Photoshop CS blending options.
